There was a Skull and Crossbones insignia on the popes coffin what the hell was that.
He had a lead coffin, a wood one, and another one. pretty creepy.
1) Cypress the innermost coffin, signifies the popes humanity
2) 800 pound lead coffin bears a skull and crossbones insignia
3) The outer elm coffin symbolizes the dignity of the pope and allows him to be carried in a wooden coffin like any other person.
What the hell does the 800-pound lead skull and crossbones coffin symbolize?
I have lost all faith in humanity

1. The coffin was zinc, rather than lead. Supposedly because zinc is believed to help prevent decay.
2. Skull-and-crossbones: perhaps the most universal symbol of "death"? (Unless you think JPII was secretly a pirate)
Seems like no great mystery - 'some honored dead guy' -

Re: What The Hell
Fri, April 15, 2005 - 1:01 PMI had been led to believe that the skull & crossbones was a Masonic symbol- I forget the exact context, but I think it had to do with Hiram Abif & his body being too big for the pit his murderers had dug, so they broke his bones and laid them crossways or something... -

Fri, April 15, 2005 - 5:08 PMI'm a Mason. The skull and crossbones is used as a symbol of...
[drum roll and dramatic pause]
death.
(Obviously, you make of this symbol anything you like, just as with any other symbol) -

Mon, April 18, 2005 - 11:36 AMAnd was this through family or invitation?
I've known several Blue Lodge members, mostly in my professional life: very different people, but all were pretty successful in their personal lives. I think the S.R. stuff may appeal to a different mindset.
(any Scottish Rite members are welcome to speak up if they like...) -

Mon, April 18, 2005 - 5:00 PMOddly enough, on my own (theoretically how it's *supposed* to work, but seldom seems to nowadays).
I suppose that reading Umberto Eco's "Focault's Pendulum" got me interested enough to read more... Interest grew from there. -

Tue, January 24, 2006 - 12:11 PMI figured it may have been three things. 1) I'm poor, white trash. 2) I sometimes espouse the politics that all rich people and most of the middle class should be quietly shot through the back of the head and thrown in a ditch. 3) They know some 'secret' about me even I'm unaware of. -

Wed, May 18, 2005 - 7:08 PMI'm not S.R., but I don't think it's foolishness, I would be interested in the degrees if I had more time, as for being"invited", it's not allowed, and is frowned upon, at least in my area. I really liked the Hiram Abif skull & Bones thing, that was funny.....

Re: What The Hell
Sat, January 21, 2006 - 9:04 PMI know I'm late to chime in, but here's my input.
I've just found jewelry with the skull & cross bones and a latin inscription.
The latin was something like this. "Brothers in life, separated only by death" or something very close to that.
I did just see an e-bay auction that had a very nice Scottish Rite ring with a skull between the birds, where most have a diamond. Very nice. I did not win the sale.
gems by jim is in my lodge. He now has a very nice skull & cross bones ring.
I'm mentioning, not promoting for him. Don't flag me for it.
Hi tribe, by the way.
